BRIT Awards 2015: Who's Going to Win?

This week could be titled The Week of The Awards after it began with the Oscars on Sunday The Brits are coming- or already have arrived, following Eddie Redmayne's win for Best Actor after playing Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything in Hollywood's Dolby Theatre.

Tomorrow, some of the world's biggest artists, including Taylor Swift (eeek!) and Ed Sheeran, will be performing on the stage at The O2, London, but who's going to win big at The Brits?

British Male Solo Artist

  • Damon Albarn
  • Ed Sheeran
  • George Ezra
  • Paolo Nutini
  • Sam Smith

After grabbing not one, not two, but FOUR nominations at The BRITs, it could be argued that Sam Smith is surely the only winner for the award. However, my vote would go to Ed Sheeran for Best Male Solo Artist, after his second album, 'X' overtook Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' to become the UK's fastest-selling album of 2014 and then became the UK's best-selling album of the same year, selling 1.2 million copies.

British Female Solo Artist

  • Ella Henderson
  • FKA Twigs
  • Jessie Ware
  • Lily Allen
  • Paloma Faith

Birth namTahliah Debrett Barnet, FKA Twigs is a new face on the scene- but one that has made a big impression. Previously, Tahliah was a dancer in videos by Ed Sheeran, Kylie Minogue, Jessie J and other well-known artists but now she's getting her turn in the limelight- especially with a BRIT award on the cards. Alternatively, Ella Henderson could be in with a chance, after her debut single, 'Ghost', went to Number 1 in the charts.

British Group

  • Alt-J
  • Clean Bandit
  • Coldplay
  • One Direction
  • Royal Blood

As all of these groups had extreme success in 2014, the winner for British Group is a very difficult one to decide. As one of the performers on the night, Royal Blood are tipped to win this award, but Coldplay are also in with a chance after 'Ghost Stories' sold 168,000 copies in its first week. That said, One Direction are possibly the most famous group in the world right now, so this trophy could be going to any one of the nominees.

Best British Single

Calvin Harris- 'Summer'
Clean Bandit Ft Jess Glynne- 'Rather Be'
Duke Dumont Ft Jax Jones- 'I Got U'
Ed Sheeran- 'Thinking Out Loud'
Ella Henderson- 'Ghost'
George Ezra- 'Budapest'
Mark Ronson Ft Bruno Mars- 'Uptown Funk'
Route 94 Ft Jess Glynne- 'My Love'
Sam Smith- 'Stay With Me'
Sigma- 'Nobody to Love'

If I were to choose the winner for this award, I would most certainly have to go with 'Rather Be', by Clean Bandit Ft Jess Glynne, after the tune became 2014's anthem of the summer. Admit it, the number of times you've turned something down with the insanely catchy 'n-n-n-no, no, no' chorus of the song have outstretched the number of fingers you have.

Mastercard British Album

  • Alt-J – This Is All Yours
  • Ed Sheeran – X
  • George Ezra – Wanted On Voyage
  • Royal Blood – Royal Blood
  • Sam Smith – In The Lonely Hour

Despite every nominated album being thoroughly successful last year, the best-selling album of 2014 was 'X', making Ed Sheeran the likely winner of this award- and I would love him to! Ed Sheeran is one of the many performers taking to the stage at The O2 tomorrow, as are Royal Blood, so these two acts seem to be in with a good chance.

British Breakthrough

  • Chvrches
  • FKA Twigs
  • George Ezra
  • Royal Blood
  • Sam Smith

British Breakthrough? Worldwide breakthrough more like, for an artist that goes by the name of Sam Smith. The soulful notes of Smith have particularly been in a hit in the US, where Sam seems to be friends with EVERYONE. Personally, I would love for George Ezra to take home British Breakthrough as he was fantastic when I saw him live back in December but any of the nominees would make a deserving winner.

British Video of the Year

  • Calvin Harris – 'Summer'
  • Charli XCX – 'Boom Clap'
  • Duke Dumont ft Jax Jones – 'I Got U'
  • Ed Sheeran – 'Thinking Out Loud'
  • Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars – 'Uptown Funk'
  • One Direction – 'You And I'
  • Rita Ora – 'I Will Never Let You Down'
  • Route 94 ft Jess Glynne – 'My Love'
  • Sam Smith – 'Stay With Me'
  • Sigma – 'Nobody To Love'

Since the nominations were announced back in January, each week, thousands of fans have been tweeting for their favourite video to take home British Video of the Year. Currently, One Direction are at the top of the leaderboard so are looking like likely winners, but will someone overtake them before the awards on Wednesday? Personally, I would choose 'Thinking Out Loud', in which Ed Sheeran adorably dances with Brittany Cherry. So cute.

International Group

  • 5 Seconds of Summer
  • The Black Keys
  • First Aid Kit
  • Foo Fighters
  • The War On Drugs

Just announced as one of Glastonbury Festival's headliners for 2015, surely Foo Fighters will be taking home the BRIT for International Group? Alternatively, 5 Seconds of Summer have seen popularity levels soar since supporting One Direction on their tour so we are just going to have to wait and see for the result to be announced tomorrow.

International Female

  • Beyonce
  • Lana Del Ray
  • Sia
  • St Vincent
  • Taylor Swift

TAYLOR. Okay, so this category is again a very, very strong one, with Sia's sixth album being a shining success and Beyonce's self-titled album storming the charts but, really, this award can only go to one of the nominees, Taylor Swift. '1989' sold over 3,660,000 copies in the US alone last year, making it the best-selling album of the year there and the album was also the UK's best-selling female solo album. Enough said, right?

International Male

  • Beck
  • Hozier
  • Jack White
  • John Legend
  • Pharrell Williams

Whilst every nominee in this category has had a hit in the past year, two artists stand out to me: Pharrell Williams and John Legend. Despite their music being very different, both were extremely successful in 2014, with Legend's 'All of Me' winning over the hearts of millions across the globe and Pharrell- well, who DIDN'T clap along to 'Happy' here, there and everywhere?! Out of these two, I'd say Pharrell, but we'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out...

Critics' Choice

  • James Bay - WINNER
  • George The Poet

Review: 'The Band' at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield

Full of charm, wit and heartwrenching emotion, the Take That musical is simply divine. The musical follows the lives of a group of 16-year-old schoolgirls who have bonded over their adoration for 'the band'. The girls’ dream becomes reality when they have the opportunity to see the boy band live but tragedy strikes and their friendship breaks apart. 25 years on, a competition win could rekindle the girls once more. Featuring all the Take That classics from ‘Never Forget’ to ‘Rule the World’, this is a musical no 90s fan can miss. www.thebandmusical.com 'The Band' are made up of the five winners from BBC One's Let It Shine AJ Bentley, Nick Carsberg, Curtis T Johns, Yazdan Qafouri and Sario Solomon who make up pop group Five to Five. The sublime quintet is on stage for the majority of the production, touchingly representing the fact that, deep down, the boys are there wherever the girls go. Each performer offers vocals just as strong as the other a

Interview with ‘Sick’ scriptwriter and performer Shey Hargreaves

From hunting down a patient’s lost teeth to witnessing someone turn down potentially life-saving treatment, scriptwriter Shey Hargeaves’ experience of working for the NHS was eye-opening to say the least. Reflecting on her time in a hospital, Shey shares tales of resilience and humour in her hour-long show Sick . “It’s scary!” Shey exclaims as I ask what it has been like leading a one-woman show for the first time. “You're totally on your own out there. But, it's quite nice because you're in control. That means you can play off the audience more. I think that makes for quite a warm, responsive kind of show.” The stories behind Sick are authentic accounts from the four-year period Shey spent within the NHS. Having completed a Master’s in Scriptwriting at the University of East Anglia, Shey was looking to find work when she came across a receptionist position for an Emergency Medical Assessment Unit in 2013. “If I had to be in a reasonably low-paid job and pay t

Review: The Rocky Horror Show at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield

I wonder if writer Richard O’Brien expected The Rocky Horror Show to enthral audiences of hundreds more than 45 years after it debuted at the tiny Royal Court in London. Exploring themes of gender identity and sexuality in a tribute to mid-20 th century science fiction, O’Brien’s outrageous and energetic Rocky Horror Show is an immense amount of fun. The show follows the eye-opening encounters of newly engaged couple Brad and Janet, who unintentionally become the guests of a death-defying extravaganza one stormy night. Stephen Webb marvels as scientist Frank-N-Furter, commanding the stage of the tour’s remarkable cast throughout his confident portrayal of the wild Transylvanian transvestite. Philip Franks excels as The Narrator, modernising the 1973 musical with a remark on Brexit proceedings and responding with sharp wit to engagement from the audience, and former Strictly Come Dancing professional Joanne Clifton puts on an equally compelling performance as Janet. Clifton’s
